A 43-year-old Beijing artist may have hit on the ultimate in recycling: he fits fragments of Ming dynasty porcelain together like parts of a jigsaw puzzle and sews them with silver wire into full-length dresses.
Two of the dresses and a man’s jacket, shirt and tie—all made of ancient porcelain shards gathered over the years by Li Xiaofeng —are being exhibited at ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries in downtown Coral Gables.
One dress and the jacket include shards from dynasties as far back as the 12th Century, notes gallery owner Virginia Miller, who planned to show the works for the first time outside China during Art Basel Miami Beach.
“Instead of coming to the Port of Miami they got waylaid on a slow truck from Los Angeles and just arrived,” she added. “But if anyone is looking for a really unique Christmas present…”
ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries has a 35-year-history of introducing historically significant art to South Florida. For more information, call 305-444-4493 or visit the gallery web site, www.virginiamiller.com.
