Miami has a huge reggae music and indie film scene, and this weekend the Florida premiere screening of the award-winning indie documentary “RiseUp” is taking place at the Adrienne Arsht Center. Jamaica’s underground music scene is the film’s subject and it is directed by Miami local (and UM grad) Luciano Blotta.
With music and appearances by legends Lee “Scratch” Perry, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, and a slew of soon-to-be superstars, “RiseUp” follows artists in the dangerous streets, back alleys and crowded dancehalls of Kingston and the countryside. These artists demonstrate the raw power of hope and courage in a land which is largely unseen, but certainly not unsung in their fight to rise up from obscurity and write themselves into the pages of history.
There will also be a 30-minute Q&A with “RiseUp” director Luciano Blotta to follow each screening.
“RiseUp” recently won “Best Music Documentary” at AFI/Discovery Channel’s national documentary film festival Silverdocs.
“RiseUp is a Winner” – Variety
“Transcends the “music subculture” genre with abundant grace and style” – Indie Wire
“A poetic film” – The Jamaica Gleaner
Screening attendees will also receive a $10 discount on tickets to see the hit musical The Harder the Come, in its U.S. premiere at the Adrienne Arsht Center from August 29 – September 12. Featuring a hit list of reggae classics including “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” “Your Love Has Lifted Me,” and the title song, The Harder they Come is based on the ‘70s Perry Henzell cult classic film of the same title that helped make reggae an international music sensation.
