There’s a very interesting exhibition at Virginia Miller Galleries in Coral Gables you might want to check out. Here is the description…
Clad in painters’ style overalls, the crouching young woman lunges to the right, swirling a paint-laden nine-inch brush along a yard-long swath of a six-and-a-half foot painting, gracefully ending her stroke by twirling the brush up and around before its sweep in the other direction.
Michelle Concepción, a 38-year-old Puerto Rican artist. She applies layers of color, first in broad sweeps, then dribbled from the tip of a smaller brush, before lifting the edge of the stretched canvas to allow rivers of paint to flow down its surface. During the process, from paint-mixing the laborious cleaning of her varied size brushes, viewers get a clear picture of the skill along with agility and stamina demanded of a contemporary painter.
The end result: an abstract enigma whose interpretation is up to the viewer, according to art critic Peter Frank. “Each of us sees the myriad interplays of form, color and shade that dominate Concepción’s paintings slightly differently, perhaps, but we all recognize that her forms float, often one across another.”
Contributing to the varying interpretations of her paintings is their unique illusion of texture. “She has developed a method of painting that creates a realistic appearance of a rough, deep texture—like the surface of an asteroid—despite the flat surfaces of her canvases,” notes gallery owner Virginia Miller. “It’s an amazing technique that simply can’t be appreciated from a photo or on a computer.”
Since 1988, the artist has participated in 50 group and solo exhibitions in museums and galleries in Spain, Germany, and the United States. Her current exhibition at ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries is her first one-person show in the U.S.
