Cuban Artist Comes to RDZ Fine Art Gallery in Miami

August 12, 2008 by Group

Latin women come to life at a new exhibit by famed Cuban artist Yuri Martinez Ramos at the RDZ Fine Art gallery in the Gables Marquis, 3232 Coral Way in Miami, opening Friday, Aug. 15.

Martinez Ramos’ first solo art show in Miami is titled “Eres Tu – Latin Women” featuring Latin women in different sceneries. “Miami Mojito” features a sexy brunette sipping a drink at a Miami café reminiscing of Cuban life. “Reggaeton on 47th St” showcases an urban Dominican girl with a New York Yankees baseball cap pushing a boy in a stroller carrying maracas. And “New York Smoke” shows a strong Latina businesswoman smoking a cigar that can compete with any male executive on Wall Street. These are just a few of the pieces of Martinez Ramos’ show that will encompass about 20 paintings in his technique of magical realism, which mixes reality with fantasy and incorporates memories of his life in Cuba. Martinez Ramos left Cuba in 2000 with his wife and young son on a professional visa. For many Cubans, a professional visa is very hard to come by.

Martinez Ramos is the first solo artist of the new RDZ Fine Art gallery, which is the brainchild of art collector Edward Rodriguez. RDZ’s goal is to provide the Miami/South Florida Art Collector with a unique cultural and art buying experience, reminiscent of the galleries in SOHO New York and Laguna Beach, Calif.

Rodriguez said as a private collector, he always found Yuri’s works to be lyrical and thought-provoking that pushed the edge of modernism in his figurative pieces.

“As a new gallery owner, I am truly excited to bring to Miami a fresh look, something that this audience has not had the privilege of viewing on a day-today basis,” Rodriguez said. “Yuri truly is a modern master, and I welcome his vision and passion.”

Since 1998, Martinez has staged several solo exhibitions and has participated in group shows in Los Angeles and New York. But this is the first time the native Cuban artist is showcasing his work in Miami, home to one of the largest Cuban communities.

His work has also been displayed at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach and in Miami, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and San Francisco. His art has been purchased by notable collectors, such as Academy Award winner Whoopi Goldberg, actors Jason Priestly and Patrick Dempsey.
