Miami Art Museum Meets the Hamptons: New York gallerist and collector Charlie Cowles’ acclaimed gift to MAM, the 102 works in Modern Photographs: The Machine, the Body and the City — Selections from the Charles Cowles Collection, opens on September 21 at the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, New York.
The Parrish’s presentation of this remarkable collection of photographs is only one of the Long Island museum’s connections to MAM. The Parrish is also earning international visibility for the Herzog & de Meuron design for its new facility, which evokes the forms of a 19th century artists’ colony. Modern Photographs will be on view at the Parrish through November 30. The Parrish Art Museum is located at 25 Job’s Lane. It is open Monday, Thursday–Saturday from 11am – 5pm and Sunday 1 – 5pm.
Disappearances Set to Disappear: Don’t miss what the Miami Herald called a “must see” exhibition — MAM’s Disappearances, Shadows and Illusions, which closes on September 21. If you’ve already seen it, now is a great time to return. Additional works from MAM’s collection, including photographs by Shimon Attie, Vicenta Casañ, Quisqueya Henriquez, Jerome Liebling and Frank Majore, have been rotated into the exhibition.
Revolutionary Reading: On Tuesday, September 23, MAM’s Reading Art group discusses the Impressionist’s battle for recognition chronicled in Ross King’s The Judgment of Paris: The Revolutionary Decade that Gave the World Impressionism. The New York Times praised King’s book as a “spirited account …. of the outsize personalities who transformed the way the world looked at painting.” The event will take place from 6:30-8:30 pm at Books & Books in Coral Gables, located at 265 Aragon Avenue. Public parking garage is located across the street. Tickets validated at Books & Books will be charged a reduced rate. For more information, contact MAM’s Education Department at 305.375.4073.
A Wide-Ranging ARTrek: MAM’s first ARTrek for the new season will include visits of everything from “the most dynamic collection in Miami” to an innovative installation evoking an abandoned, adults-only theme park. The September 27 event begins at Dennis and Debra Scholl’s World Class Boxing art space for an early look at curator Desiree Cronk’s selections from their collection. Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood includes photographs, sculptures and video from such artists as Peter Garfield, Candida Hofer, Catherine Opie, Gabriel Orozco, Sean Duffy, Alice Channer and Thomas Demand. Trekkers will also take in the first exhibition in the 10th anniversary season of Locust Projects. The exhibition is the creation of Clifton Childree, winner of the first Hilger Artist Project Award. With support from this award, Childree, best known for his black-and-white slapstick horror movies, is creating the ruins of an adult-themed amusement park filled with a burnt-out roller coaster and sadistic arcade games. MAM ARTreks are a membership benefit exclusively for Friends and above. For more information call Addy Castellanos at 305.375.1707.
A Different Kind of Second Saturday: MAM’s monthly Second Saturday’s are Free for Families, sponsored by the MetLife Foundation, is widely-recognized as one of the museum’s longstanding contributions to the community. An often less-recognized way that MAM supports the arts will take the spotlight the second Saturday of October when the MAM Staff Art Show opens at the Buena Vista Building in the Design District. Works by the many local artists who also work for MAM will be on view in the building’s gallery space, located at 180 NE 39 Street, Suite 120 in Miami. For additional information, contact Jay Ore at 305.375.4415.
MAM in the Community: MAM’s Art Caravan makes a return visit to Camp Choee for the annual Girl Scouts Rally. MAM’s education staff will be on hand from 10am-1pm on September 20 to provide hands-on activities for this popular traveling version of the museum’s long-term Second Saturdays are Free for Families program.
We hope you will enjoy the many exhibitions and events at MAM this month. If you’d like to arrange a docent-led tour of one of our exhibitions, please call our Education Department at 305.375.4073.
