Nestor Torres Joins The Cleveland Orchestra in Miami

February 18, 2009 by Group

arshtLatin Grammy Award winner, flutist, and Miami resident Nestor Torres will join The Cleveland Orchestra in Miami for April concerts as the narrator of a bilingual performance of Peter and the Wolf/Pedro y el Lobo, a favorite of the classical music repertoire that introduces young people to the orchestra.

A Family Concert open to the public will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County.  Cleveland Orchestra Assistant Conductor Tito Muñoz will lead the program, and Nestor Torres will provide both Spanish and English narration for this concert, which includes works by Mozart, Cimarosa, Dvořák, and Delecluse, in addition to Peter and the Wolf/Pedro y el Lobo.

Mr. Torres and Cleveland Orchestra Assistant Principal Flute Marisela Sager will perform the third movement from the Concerto in G major for Two Flutes by Domenico Cimarosa.

This concert is preceded by the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Family Fest, a free, event-filled day at the Arsht Center beginning at 11:30 a.m.

The same program will be performed at Education Concerts for public elementary school students in partnership with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools on Thursday, April 2, at 10:00 a.m. and noon, at the Arsht Center.

In Peter and the Wolf/Pedro y el Lobo, each character in Prokofiev’s musical story about an adventurous little boy is represented by the distinctive sound of a different musical instrument or group of instruments.

Teachers at participating schools will receive related curriculum materials including CDs, teacher guides, and student newspapers to help them prepare students for the concert.

The Education and Family Concerts are presented during the third week of the Orchestra’s 2009 Miami Residency, which also includes Cleveland Orchestra subscription concerts on Friday, April 3, and Saturday, April 4, at 8 p.m. at the Arsht Center.
